Americans Stood Tall.

After all the conversations and all the analysis the much anticipated game in Mexico City where the United States faced off against their dreaded foe Mexico, the game sure delivered the excitement many thought it would. Headed into the game the USMNT were underdogs having never won a game on mexican soil. After the game, nothing changed.

After 90 minutes and a hard fought battle from both sides, the game ended in a draw. For the US, it was more like a win. Mexico was expected by many to come out victorius being that the Azteca is one of the most lopsided home field advantage of any sport. With the home field advantage, Mexico also had been cruising through the World Cup Qualifiers. Knowing what Mexico had to offer, head coach Bruce Arena wanted to surprise the Mexican national team by coming out with a new formation and new faces to the starting lineup.

From the very beginning there were hard hits, bodies falling and elbows being thrown. It was already looking like the match many were hoping for. Things were looking evenly matched until Mexico made a costly mistake in the back with Michael Bradley intercepting a pass then taking it down field to score from over 30 yards out a floater into the back of the net while Mexican goalkeeper Memo Ochoa could only watch the ball go over his hand. Just over 15 minutes later Carlos Vela scores a stunner in the corner as it slips past US defenders and out of reach for goalkeeper Brad Guzan.

At the final whistle many of the fans for Mexico were long gone or already headed towards the exits in disappointment knowing the US had come to play. American forward Jozy Altidore said it best, “We showed a lot of grit and a lot of fight. We've got to happy with a point, it is always a special game and a special place to play.” The USMNT have a long road ahead if they want to continue to climb the world rankings but things are looking bright. World Cup qualifying will resume in September with an important match for US facing Costa Rica, while Mexico will take on Panama
